I have watched the instructional videos that they have on gracie academy dot com. I can tell you that I actually like the instructionals and I think they do a pretty good job with it. However, I would never claim to be a gracie student. Or an online student. I consider myself a student of everything.
The Machado's have a good online training comunity. I expected this to be the same thing. Until they started giving out rank for it. But the belt is only as good as the person wearing it.
I don't think this is going to fall apart due to lack of interest. I think this is going to blow up. Time will tell.
(slaps self for realizing what i said) i should lurk more post less.

Did you see where you can host a Gracie Garage? You have to have 100 square foot of mat space and then post a video of the spot on the site. Then you can have an official Gracie Garage.
Is it just me or is this starting to sound like some type of cult?
They did the Garage thing early on, I remember people saying they trained by Gracie Video tapes in there Garage.
Really? Well now they have a database and everything. Cool, for finding training partners though!
I can see using this as a training aid, especially since I'm in the hinterland. However, while I could consider starting up a "garage" club, I would never consider pursuing rank through such a method. Also, I would also try and get Phil to come up every other month or so for seminars, because I can not believe for a second that "Gracie Garage" with only video instruction can take the place of a live instructor.

Something else I think is interesting is that anyone who has about 5 minutes worth of grappling training, knows all of the stuff in these videos. So you don't even need to buy all these training videos. Just print off the order of techniques for each video they want. Then take your test. There shouldn't be any problem with anyone getting this certification from them. Other than waiting for the check to cash.
I do like how they state in the striking myths section the striking arts are a waste of time and the GJJ is an all encompassing art. Interesting.
hmmmm... Gracie Thai?
