Yrkoon9's post on the differences between GJJ and BJJ seems to get more relevant every year. I'm not sure if the self-defence angle so heavily pushed by the Gracie Academy wasn't always going to lead to that division, however, given that they've been deriding 'sport' jiu jitsu from the start. E.g., to quote another chunk from that GJJ Advanced interview:
Same reason Royce gave for giving up on the UFC (though of course he did eventually renege on that to go back and fight Hughes), back in this interview from 1995.

The GJJ Street vs Tournament thing is worse than ever. Their arguement is "Oh, in the street, he wont know how to grapple"
So uh, yeah, the key to fighting a BJJ blackbelt in an MMA fight is to not know how to grapple at all. Thatll throw him off...
I can understand helios arguement, of not liking scores/time limits. But his grandsons are retarded. -

So let's see. People with no experience and no ukemi training are being encouraged to practice throws on their garage floors in front of webcams.
Am I the only one who sees the awesome?
Edit:I suppose my feeble attempts at wit should probably be moved to the YMAS thread. However that shakes out.Last edited by HappyOldGuy; 3/11/2009 12:36pm at .

The Gracie University strongly recommends against using chimpanzees as grappling partners and will not accept any video that includes a chimpanzee.

I would recommend logging on to the site (its free) and looking at the set of example grading videos they have posted there. It is most interesting. -

You know there are TMAers laughing their asses off right now.
The hood mentality is crippling disease, that attacks your nervous system. It makes you nervous of the system. Gangsters and hood rats are especially susceptible to this growth stunting mentality. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. --Keith David--Ice Cube
