    Hell yeah! Hell no!

1993, Gracie vs Shamrock - what else to see?

MMA, UFC, [insert 3-letter acronym here], and all that stuff is quite new to me, so when I picked up martial arts again after 8 years hiatus I've sort of re-aquinted myself to the topic.

A TV channel local to Sweden aired some sort of "best of Gracie" program, and I've just had the pleasure of seeing Royce Gracie in action through a number of fights, the one versus Shamrock in -93 being one of them - fun stuff!

This is as far as I've gathered somewhat of a bedrock of modern mixed martial arts - a heritage of sorts - and I'm wondering: what other fights should I really not miss?

...and I can't quite wrap my mind around the fact that Royce is fighting in a gi, against fighters in shorts and not much else...

    Regards,
    Lars

All you need to watch is Gracie. No one else is important. Watch the first 3 UFCs and don't watch his rematch with Shamrock or his recent fight with Hughes.

You'll need to watch this match to understand certain jokes:
YouTube - Keith Hackney vs Joe Son

    Also this one:
YouTube - Fred Ettish. Fetal Fighter

First one seems to be non-functional.

Second one seems to be invaded by facial hair (and later, blood).

Reading between the lines (?) however - yes, I know my martial art ain't all that. To add insult to - uhm - insult: I like katas... no wish or inclination what so ever in the direction of being an octagon badass (this last month 75% of our training sessions have been cancelled due to both instructors and half of the students being injured... might be we're overdoing the aliveness part, or might be we're too sloppy to spar safely. My bet is on the last option).

    Regards,
    Lars

Here's a link to the first one: YouTube - Keith Hackney vs Joe Son

As far as your ability to read between the lines, you might want to practice that a bit more as well. Or just Google up "Fred Ettish."

I'll do the googling - the name rings a bell.

Sadly the link you're giving still fails with a "We're sorry, this video is no longer available"-message.

    Off googlin', brb

Do you have cable? If so, go to SpikeTV on thursday nights. They have a show called 'UFC Unleashed' where they show fights from old episodes. Fox sports has the same thing with Pride (consult your local listings). Also, just watch a bunch on he internet from these guys:
    Fedor
    Nogieura
    Randy Couture
    Genki Sudo
    Anderson Silva
    Wanderlei Silva
    Sakuraba

Those are just some names off the top of my head. YouTube them and watch.

Also, there is a thread here about people's favorite fights. Search for it.

    Will do, thankee muchly!

Got no cable, but a fairly chunky satellite dish. SpikeTV isn't available but UFC Unleashed is aired semi-regularly through at least one of the available channels.

Rivington: sorry for being a thin-skinned arse regarding the "reading between the lines" - this site is quite a bit harsher to n00bs than what I'm used to so my paranoia is working double time here...
