Those orphans that get adopted by a gym must get fed better than your average peasant right?

Keep in perspective that in Thailand you have legit gyms and you have McDojo's just like anywhere else. Back in 1996 I spent a summer in Bangkok and did some training in Muay Thai, at this point the only martial arts training I had was a red belt in TKD from about 5 years before. I ended up at a pretty legit place (by pure chance) and at the age of 17 weighing about 115-120 was routinely getting my ass handed to me by 14 yr olds who literally lived at the gym we trained at. So you can get some good training out of it but don't expect to go "train" for a month and then beat a Muay Thai champ

Would anyone else try going to Thailand for a year to do this **** if it was an all-expenses paid trip? I would probably come back with a few missing teeth and a concussion, but this sounds like an awesome adventure.

Edit: Mind you, I am also the type of guy who would play Russian Roulette for a billion dollars.

Anyone serious would make that trip with a detatchment from a legit school that has experience and contacts there (like Sityodtong).

In the guys defense, are there any decent 100kg Thaiboxers? This movie should have been shot in the Netherlands.

A fighters heart by Sam Sheridan gives a good account of training in thailand (fairtex) and the changes upon his return a few years later.

I'd play it for a million if I could also be sure my life insurance would pay.

I just got to the part where he says "I nearly burnt myself out last week, y'know running 8-10 laps, and I just don't need to".

All I could think was "Yes, yes you fucking do".

I think some of you are being overly critical of the camps. Catering to these kind of "tourists" is a decent source of income, and it beats the **** out of the other kind of tourism that goes on there.

The guy wins because he gets to say he trained in Thailand

The Thai's win because they get to set up a fat dumb yank against the stadium janitor.

Im sure if they felt they had a prospect with serious dedication and skills they wouldnt just throw him anyone for the money. They still get some cash from people attending the fights so they would want to make it a event.
