My wife's 5'3ish and 135 or so. She can handle a 1911 easily, but my 9mm Kel-Tec hurts her hands.

Her dept uses PX4's in .45? Christ, those must be a bit hard to control; it's not exactly a Glock.

www.gun-deals.com <-- use that for ammo prices.

I would suggest going to a place where you can rent them, and work up to it.

I own one handgun for serious work, a Sig 220. I have never had a problem with it. However, frankly, start her with a .22 target to learn the basics.

If you start too high you will get a flinch that will never get unlearned.

I also have a hammerless .38, but that is for a very special task.

I just recently acquired a Springfield Armory XD in .40 S&W and I love the thing. I almost want to sleep with it, if it wasn't for the girlfriend I probably would. It's got a GREAT grip for me, which everybody says is the most important thing. So even if you don't get to shoot guns at the store go and hold a whole bunch of them.

Do you know what she will be qualifying with in the academy? Down here in FL, you qualify with a 38 to get out of the academy. Then you move to automatics when you go to wherever you will be working. Due to the fact that different places issue different stuff.

But my point is, no one graduates the academy if they don't qualify on the 38 first. It was nice for me being familiar with loading and unloading a 38. Also using speed loaders. We have a lot of people fail out because they never get used to using the 38. And some of them have been firing automatics for a while. When we qualify it is for accuracy and time. So if you fumble around with the speed loaders or holster, then you start to have problems.

So I would just make sure she is familiar with all of the intricacies of the gun she will use in the academy.

    Open sight.

    Point and shoot.

.45 that fits her hand well.

Take her to the range and rent several handguns in different calibers.

It is important that her choice fit her hand (see above - point and shoot).
