Video - Some Top Game BJJ Concepts

What's up everyone,

New video (actually a bit older, that's why the quality isn't that great but wanted to share anyway.)

This video discusses important aspects that one should pay attention to in order to have an effective top game with good control. These concepts apply gi and no-gi.

Points discussed:

Blocking and controlling the hips right off the pass
Different ways to block the hips
- With your hips
- With your knee
- With your arm
The importance of not just relying on holding your opponent down in just one position such as side control.
The importance of how knowing when and how to move on top will lead to you having better top control and will lead to more opening.

Been trying to improve my top game lately. I'm going to N-S a lot. That hugging the hips tip is a good one. I've done something like that before but not so committed. I gotta try it real deep like you showed.

What do you think of taking the back from the top of North south? I've been having fun doing that lately.

Are you talking about using double-unders gripping the arm pit or lapels and pulling the guy back into you to take the back from N/S?

If so, I have done this quite a few times in gi but not in no-gi. Although, I stopped doing it a while ago simply because it was really a 50/50 transition for me in that if the guy on the bottom was really active there is too much space opened up between you and your opponent when setting up the transition and the chance of escape or recovery is greatly increased.

I'll use it every no and again but it is pretty low on my option pole from the N/S position.
