LOL... I stopped watching at :34 for the fact that he wants to discuss the differences between "old style" and "ring style", yet he is unable to demonstrate "ring style" properly. If you look at any of his other video clips he posts on YouTube, you'll see more of the same. His students are unable to perform "ring style" Muay Thai properly, either.

Looks like both his "ring style" & "old style" kicks are pretty sound to me. Using the term "proper" in martial arts carries only a certain amount of weight. Proper is more suited for stylistic competition like TKD and points sparring. Where you get points for being pretty and execusion vs damage done. IMO, proper in Muay Thai is if you can land it and make it hurt. Granted, as an art, Muay Thai has hurting down to a fine science. MT is very individualistic. The basics are there to lay a foundation. The rest of the house is up to you and what works for you.

    tabwyo... (love your B.Franklin quote!!!)

Nope... his supposed "ring style" demonstrations are pretty bad. I've had the opportunity to train with a genuine Muay Boran master, and while my experience is admittedly limited, the "ring" and "old style" kicking isn't noticeably different.

Here's Donnie B claiming to demonstrate the difference between "Ring" and "Old Style" knees....

"Sound" doesn't equal 100% correct or 100% bat **** wrong.

He doesn't set up, move or connect the way I do. But I can recognize his basic mechanics. But I 100% concede the fact that this clip isn't a shining example of the techniques. In fact it is pretty sloppy IMO. I think I was originally hitting on Kidspats point of there being a time and place for both style kicks. Then got caught up in trying to defend my veiw point when it didn't need defending.

You're right, he's not 100% wrong, but his mechanics are off enough that I consider it to be wrong.

Don't get me wrong! Some of his videos actually aren't too bad, and they have given me ideas on how to better explain techniques to my own students, but the fact remains that he's passing himself off as an authority of "ring" and "old" style Muay Thai, but its pretty obvious to me (and a few others) that he's neither.

Why does Donnie B. dress like a tennis instructor instead of a Muay Thai coach?
