Interesting story about wrist locks actually. We practice a handful of them in my karate class, and my sensei actually addressed the practicality of them. He commented that they do work, but they're not like an armbar. They won't hold, and can be broken out of much more easily, even by an untrained fighter. His personal philosophy on them is that if you're going to use a wristlock, then do it fast, do something to incapacitate or temporarily stop the guy you use it on, and then bust a move out of whatever situation you had to use a wristlock in.

I'm not sure how to respond to this though, as I haven't pressure tested many of them. Perhaps the good folks of Bullshido can inform me just how valid this statement might be?

That would be known as communitive locking. And it is absolutely correct. Reason being that if youhave the best wrist lock in the world on the guy and it is not locking the elbow to the shoulder to the body he can simply move his elbow and presto no wrist lock.
