    After workout shower

Hey guys. So I was reading Judo Training Methods on the weekend, and it mentions that a long hot shower after heavy training is bad, because it gets rid of the "pumped up" feeling in your muscles thus reducing the effectiveness of your workout. Now Donn Draeger was a bit of a pioneer in this area, but the book is old and alot has changed since then. Is what he has said the case or is it bunk? Normally after a workout I'll go really hot for a couple minutes while I wash and then I finish with hot/cold a few times. Anything wrong with this?

I don't know the answer, but lactic acid buildup and washing ringworm & staph are two concerns that could affect A) the decision to shower after class (I usually don't, but I should), and B) the temperature and duration of said water immersion.

That doesn't make any sort of scientific sense, but furthermore, do you really think that you are at the point in your training that you've conquered every other variable and need to now focus on your shower?

Obviously not, but every little bit helps. Besides which, I find a good hot shower a nice reward for working out. I just wanted to know whether it was negating to any extent what I've done in the workout.

My point is, the time/energy you invest worrying/researching this could be better invested towards something with a bigger payoff.

Have you found your gains being negated? If not, don't sweat it.

I have read in the "Science of Sports Training" that alternating hot and cold during your shower can help with recovery. How long, I forget, but something like 90 seconds on and off a few times with each. How mcuh does it help? Who knows. Also, if you are thinking about doing something good after your workout, a foam roller is worth it's weight in gold, and I think El MAcho was nice enough to post a sticky or article that goes into it in depth. I found that a little work with that in the evenings can make you feel 10 years younger, after a couple of weeks.

You know, you could solve the problem easily by bathing in protein shakes

    Cold, of course.

The key is, they must be shaken, not stirred.
