Article: Won't You Break Your Hand?

Well, the last article I posted has managed to engender page after page of (what we'll loosely call) "discussion."

Encouraged (ahem) by the response, I, with great trepidation, present to you this article, "Won't You Break Your Hands" by Keith P. Myers.

Mr. Myers was kind enough to grant permission to me to repub his article, originally published on his own (now defunct) website. I spiced it up a bit with some pics, but the words are his.

Common knowledge that conditioning does matter.

Still - the naysayers will be here shortly.

cool article, not surprised they dug up a pic of Fitzsimmons. The conditioning required of course is immense (time-wise, that is). ESPECIALLY for modern boxers, who have changed their punching methods, and have multiplied the risks of injuring their hands.
Will they be willing to unlearn what they know, what they identify with, even if it will save their hands?

    No.

In all fairness, I supplied the Fitzsimmons pic. I edited in all the pics special for the repub. Mr. Myers had nothing to do with them. I just threw them in to jaz up the visuals a bit; make it more interesting to look at.

He wrote a nice article on the evolution of the punching bag hosted over on ejmas.

Interesting article. I guess it's true that wrist injuries are pretty common when people fall and put down a palm heel type hand to break their fall.

The stats that I vaguely remember indicated that wrist injuries are the number 1 injury from falls for some young demographic (under 35 or something, I forget) while some older demographic (>50 or something) the number 1 injury was broken hip (or was it tailbone?)

I should probably look 'em up again just to refresh my memory.

Anyway, yeah, you're right. Very common injury from a fall.

We should find a way to get Bas Rutten to comment in this thread.

You realize that this would be true regardless of what thread it was posted in, right?

There would have to be a gateway thread that would draw him in, right?

Yes, according to Bas, he prefers to punch as that is how he was trained for years, and yet while fighting in Pancrase he knocked men out, ruptured organs, and in general beat them into the ground using open hand strikes.

    It's all very curious...
