    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Wow do I suck bad...

I've just got home from training at a new gym. My flatmate has been going for a while, and I decided to stay with my old coach and his BJJ and MMA program.

So off I trot to check out this new gym. I'm feeling pretty confident as I walk in the door, my jiu jutsu is fairly reasonable from all angles, and I'm a big guy, so I like to use my reach and power to my advantage. The fact that most of these guys were bigger and a lot fitter than I was didn't even cross my inflated mind.

And then I got my arse handed to me. Every. Single. Time.

I walked out with my ego in tatters, my legs and head sore from all the hits, and the biggest determination to go back and eventually win something.

Has anyone had a similar thing happen? Or maybe some advice? I was planning to at least have an amateur fight before I go away from April to August, but I think my dreams have been hastily, and painfully prioritised.

No, I pretty much kick ass everywhere I go.

Just kidding. I would imagine everyone who is actually pursuing improvement has been through something similiar. You can get discourage by it or use it for motivation. I suggest the latter.

I know exactly how you feel. Well, sort of. I'll be have a good run in training and then go switch partners and suddenly i'm a rag doll. It's annoying as hell and sometimes makes me feel pretty weak (as I'm normally the only girl in BJJ class this also happens when we do chin ups). But one moves on and i try to remember what they did where to control or block me so well, or things i did right, so next time i'm more animated.

    Did that make any sense?

When you train in the same place for a while and only that place you get used to others. Trying out new places is a good way to see what everyone else is up to.
There is no cheating, there is only jiu-jitsu.

Dude, its training. Eez not win or lose, eez grasie zhoo zhitsoo. Jus' relax, and utilize the technikes of grasie zhoo zhitsoo.

Ok, seriously though, training is about learning, not winning. Its hard to understand this, but you'll get it. Its not win or lose, its fixing your mistakes. You learn more by losing then winning.

So yeah, kick the win/lose mentality, and you'll be fine.

PROOF that I'm not a completely useless poster:

If you're not getting your ass handed to you regularly you need to change places

Luckily for me this is never an issue

Did your flat mate set you up for such a fall? As long as he doesn't rub it in too bad, thank him.

Agreed. I usually try to work on the things that have hurt me the most.
