    To children, yes, among some other coloured belts. It's fair. In order to get a blue belt you must be at least 16 years old, so if a kid started BJJ at 8 and was told it would be 8 years until he got his second belt, he'd be fairly disheartened. Kids are kids, and to keep them motivated and interested coloured belts are appropriate. Especially when their ten year old TKD friends are black belts.

    This is not uncommon for BJJ - I'm pretty sure the system of having additional belts for kids is standard.

    In Bjj: all start with white.

    Junior belt colors (15 years and younger): yellow, orange and green
    senior belt colors(16 years and older): blue, purple, brown, black, black-red interval, red.

    alot of Bjj clubs that give blue stripes on the white belt will give 3 stripes before giving the blue belt. (3 blue stripes of the adults = 3 belts of the kids).
