Basic gist as to how this developed: I was arguing with him on the baidu.com forums, one of those age-old TCMA vs MMA threads. He played the "what MA experience do you have to judge TCMA" card, I countered with the "irrelevant; I don't have to be able to sing to tell bad singing, I don't have to be able to fight to to know that certain styles consistently produce great fighters and others don't" riposte, he responds by "fine, you use your 'good' style, I'll use my 'bad' style, and let's have at it."

Normally, I'd be like, "dude, you're in China. I'm in the US. I am not buying a plane ticket just so I can fight you." Then it hit me that since I'm applying for a study abroad to Shanghai anyways, a tentative fight becomes less out of the way than usual.

@Vorpal: well, you see, at the moment the only "alive" MA experience I have is 2.5 months of San Da. I'd prefer to wait until I get somewhat alright with something useful for fighting before showing up at a TD. I mean, jeez, my style field is contemp wushu aka ballet with Chinese characteristics, ferchrissake.

@Lebell: Well, I haven't started BJJ yet. Can't very well put it in the style field, now can I? I was also under the impression that the other guy at least had some basis in traditional, although from our most recent verbal exchange he doesn't really have that much (he's currently looking for a place to train). Then again, since my training prior consisted of very little material that actually helps me fight, I think we're more or less even.

    @Munacra: Yup. Hook 'em.
    Ah yes, thats just awesome....

So you do ballet, and only 2 and a half months of san da which doesnt count for anything.
(ive done it 6 years i sorta got some baselevel by now)
You yet have to start BJJ which takes imo at least a good year before you have some idea of what the hell you're doing, he's an ubernoob himself and you'll fight in china.

and this will proof what exactly?

oh Jesus, i wish i could be there to see it.
two white dudes walk into some chinese school asking for a place to gong sau, chinese sifu asks what the grudge is, you guys explain and chances are the sifu will reply: you are both wrong, you must face the wing chun!!!
Then another sifu stands up and replies: Wing chun? dont make me laugh, it must Ving tsun surely what you mean?
then a third sifu joins in and yells: you bitches!! Hun gar for life!!!

and then this massive brawl starts and ****...

on the other hand, great plan, go for it!!!

    videos plz.

More like two white guys walk into a daoguan to look for a place to gongsau. The sifu looks them over and has a long talk. At the end, they both hug each other, then say "I was wrong", "No, I was wrong". Together they learn the true lesson of kungfu.

You know, the OP could be on to something - gong sau tourism!

I'm thinking of vacationing in Tenerife this summer. Anyone know of a Spanish MA-forum I could talk smack on and so set up "Deathmatch del Sol"?

    Actually, we're both Chinese.

Anyhoo, suppose it proves that given an equal training period, your average BJJ place turns out a better fighter than your average TMA place, even in the country that the TMA originated from. Or not.

But if this goes down, vids shall be provided.

If you win, I predict that the argument will turn into

BJJ gives you quicker improvement with a lower plateau, whereas training X years in TCMA turns you fucking super saiyan.

You haven't been training nearly long enough to prove anything about styles. The only thing it'll prove is who's the better natural athlete.

You're on, but I insist on traditional British tourist rules - combatants must have two E's, a gut-full of San Miguel, and be completely naked save for a huge comedy sombrero.

When are you going to be in Shanghai? Are you studying at Shanghai Jiaotung Daxue?
I spent my past summer in 上海. It wasn't the best, but that mostly had to do with my shitty job.
