I'm going to stick my neck out here as the following was from my years in Aikido:
The optimum grip for MA is using the last three fingers of your hand and the thumb. I have only heard Jimmy Pedro expound different, although I'm sure there are others. This is, to my understanding, the traditional way of gripping in judo, jjj and aikido.
I'm lazy and it is late, so I'm not going to look up and list the medical terms of the fingers involved.
This is not for lifting, but for grabbing an object similar to a wrist or leg (above the ankle) or maintaining the grip on an object (knife, stick, etc).
You can experiment on yourself (grap your wrist and squeeze first using the bottom three digits). Afterwards, add strength to the last finger (the one you use to point iwth). Notice how the grip starts to release pressure from your bottom fingers.
One exercise I've used is to do pull ups hanging from a door frame, hanging by finger tips only. Using a towel as described earlier, you are still using more of the lower fingers.
Just a thought for your experimentation.
Can provide photos if really necessary (shoulder is injured at the moment). -
