Maybe he realized that empty handed, his best chance against someone with a sword was to run. I am not sure what that has to do with his martial prowess as much as common sense.

Get your vision checked, does it look like the guys carrying a sword? ->

You throwing a fuzzy pic up there doesn't tell me ****. I had no idea that was the attacker. What the **** does a shitty still security photo tell anyway? That you can't see the sword from that angle? You're smarter than that.

The first "principle" of self-defense must ALWAYS be run away. So he was smart.

Look, I train an art -- JKD -- that is based pretty much solely on Principles. It does open-up a wide range of techniques, and many of those aren't something I would pull out in a ring.

It gets frustrating, when you're training BJJ with someone who dosen't understand that you're DRILLING right now, it's your partner's duty to be a good little guinea pig for a bit, and they're fucking your move around with counters. I've gotten to the point of saying quietly a few times: "You know, I could just punch you in the balls or something. I would if this was 'real'" or something similar.

Not all principles are valid in a "sport" setting. I wouln't eye-jab for instance, or groin kick (though I'd love to have a MMA fight where that was legal. That would be a fair comprimise, I think, if I were fighting a guy).

Like I said, the first principle is run away -- obviously, can't do that in a ring fight.
Second principle is, hurt the guy, hurt him bad, make certain he can't get up, then run away. Not being Ryan Gracie, I don't know that this is valid in the ring either.

Wastrel, I'd like you to elaborate your point, which I find intriguing. Please?

Did I not state he was attacked with a knife in the post? Where did I mention the use of a sword? You can't possibly be this stupid. Go back and reread my post.

Of course if you are out of yoru element you're at a distavantage.

The fact DOES remain if you know unarmed you have some kind of a chance, and if you know weapons like kali you ahve some kind of a chance, and if you know how to use a gun you have a chance. Hell, if you are just in shape thats a huge advantage.

And no, nobody ever thought MMA was gods gift to combat. It IS a good UNARMED combat competition. When and if you see stickfights or whatnot it will incorporate weapons. I've heard of a few actually. We ALL know MMA is one on one without weapons. Bringing it up is like saying the sky is blue.

If you want to learn to fight in a battlefield you join the army, plain and simple. But if you learn MMA and take up Kali you're at an advantage against the vast, vast majority if people you'd run into as a civilian. If you carry a gun and learn to use and retain it, even better.

And no, non-sparring arts aren't gonna do **** for anything except forms performances.
