    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Darwin AUS (Attn Australian Members)

A really good friend of mine is taking a job at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, NWTerritories Australia.

He has been unable to find anything in Darwin besides a MT/Boxing gym, which he's kind of uninterested in. Anyone know of anything?

He'll be getting his blue in January and will be moving in May or June and will be there for 2-3 years and doesn't want to quit grappling for that long.

    There's always judo:

I'm not aware of any bjj clubs in Darwin though I've heard rumours of MMA/BJJ associated with the university sports associations. I doubt the instruction is very good if it exists though I'm sure someone at one of those judo clubs will know more.

Cool, thanks. I'm not sure how much of a fit judo would be. I don't know that he'd enjoy it too much and would probably just revert to wrestling (he went to college because of wrestling and somehow ended up in academia). I'll definitely mention it to him though.

There are a few bjj purples from AUS here (NSLightsout) and JohnnyS is a blackbelt in AUS. Hopefully they can weigh in too.

Judo really might be his best bet though, Darwin is pretty much the end of the earth. Maybe send a email off to the Judo site ala bornsceptic's advice asking if they know of any BJJ in town?

I think there will probably be some uni club run by a blue belt operating there which may do to keep your friend's skills up a bit.

This is probably the closest you'd get to it up there - a John Donohue (Nova Uniao) affiliate. As you've probably guessed, Darwin isn't exactly all that huge - Melbourne is home to arguably the largest and most established BJJ scene in Australia, probably followed by Sydney and Queensland. The closest guy I can personally recommend is based in Cairns, which is a fair way away.

Honestly? I'd guess a white belt (blue belt max). From what I know, John Donohue historically gives out belts very slowly which could be a greater indication of quality than that statement would otherwise indicate. But again, as has been stated, Darwin is pretty much the end of the earth.

On a positive note, it's an absolutely beautiful part of Australia where the entire community is tight nit and open. If he wants to experience genuine Australian culture I can't think of a better place for him to live for a while.

(the boxing gym there does have a great rep too)

Almost makes up for the fact that you've banned MMA huh?
