I have no idea whether he takes in fat or not. Ask him, not us.

Shortest answer: no.
Short answer: The match will be over long before the fat has finished being digested.
Long answer: Read this book.
Shortest answer: For optimum health, get enough of all of them.

I also eat a granola bar about 40 minutes before I know Im going to work out.
Energy drinks will burn you out, anything with High Fructose Corn syrup will burn you out.
So I go with good old water and eat 90 mins before I train and the granola bar, has worked for me -

Stimulants, fast carbs, smelling salts, a brisk slap to the face...

Another (related) thing to remember is that if the "event" in question is more than one match (or one long match), you need to sustain your energy level during the event. In other words, bring snacks (perhaps in liquid form, if the breaks between matches are short).
Hope that helped. -

Try natural fruit sugar. A large apple is the best source about 1/2 hour prior. However, as H TO THE IZZO said...you really have to be taking care of yourself all the time.
After a match (I know you didn't ask, just a preemptive strike) since you will be feeling run down, try about 50g of Complex (fast) carbs to boost your insulin levels back up to normal WITHOUT spiking them and causing a crash later. -
