Kyokushin, Sanshou & Pradal Serey in Ottawa, Canada

Just did my first sanshou class tonight. Except for learning a side kick, it's been identical to muay thai so far so I didn't have any trouble.

The atmosphere is a bit different, though, being that it's taught out of a kung fu school.

Some guy in Thailand told me that the proper translation was 'free fighting'... not 'boxing' because boxing refers primarily to the use of the hands to fight, whereas Muay Thai uses shins, knees and elbows too.

I personally prefer learning Pradal Serey over Muay Thai. I've done a bit of it and while it's the same as Muay Thai, the Khmer cultural spin on it makes it very interesting, and a different experience from training Muay Thai. Khmer people are extremely interesting to meet and talk to, considering what essentially all of them have experienced (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look up 'Khmer Rouge'). So I enjoy it more than Muay Thai simply because the cultural side of it is more interesting than that of Muay Thai.

If that's true then the Mandarin Chinese translation of 'Muay Thai' would be 'San Da'. Interesting.

I'm pretty familiar with that period of their history. My fiancé was invited to work here as a lawyer:
