Where do the "Oriental Rules" come from in the first place? It basically seems like Muay Thai without kicks, and in general, strikes me as being kind of weird.

Basically, PeopleSoft started a thread about "how to save boxing", proposing a more interesting ruleset including throws, knees and elbows; I pointed out that what he was imagining was very close to old-school pugilism; we played around with some ideas and emerged with two rulesets, one very closely based on 1800s boxing and one ("Oriental") closer to kickless Muay Thai.

    Update:

So we tried several matches of experimental pugilism at the Boston TD. It was unclear how the LPR type rules would work in friendly sparring, as it's not likely to knock someone down, so we used modified SanDa (no kicks).

Good fights - not quite what I had in mind (re. breaking on the clinch and lower-body throws) but it's great to see a thread on Bullshido that has positive real-world results.

Yeah, like I said... no-kick Sanda instead of LPR. We couldn't figure out how to end a round under LPR rules in a friendly sparring match, besides a throw. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Under strict LPR rules, the round only ends when someone hits the ground (that's why there are records of fights lasting for hours). When I've fought experimental LPR bouts we just followed that rule; good hits are acknowledged, without actually going for knock-downs, but basically it's boxing with upper-body grappling and throws, the throw ending the round.

My only concern re. allowing single or double-leg throws is that it might be too easy for a gamesman to turn the bout into a tackling contest.

Good fights, anyway - thanks for the links.

Arbiter and I are going to continue to work on this. Next time we will try MMA gloves, fight from the clinch, and use only upper body throws and sweeps.
