    Weight Lifting, muscle mass, and BJJ: how to train for th3 d34dly

    I just wanted your opinion on this:
    I am pretty skinny, I weigh about 140 lbs and 5'8". I have been thinking about joining a conventional gym to do weight lifting before I get back into BJJ (my BJJ experience dates back to about ten years ago, albeit on and off), since I used to weigh 155 with less fat as well. But this bring up the BIG QUESTION:

    If you need muscle mass, is it better to lift weights and "bulk" before, or during BJJ training? Or is it better to use bodyweight exercises for BJJ?

    You have definitely been here long enough to have a good idea what the rules are in each of the sub-forums, but apparently you're too dumb or lazy to bother. So one more time:

    General grappling questions belong in Gitmo, specific ones in DHS.

    Your question is a general one, so I moved it here. If you post another general topic thread in DHS, I will subsequently Trollshido everything you post in that forum.

    Lift weights on days you don't roll. The Stronglift 5x5 is a good program. I just started on it.

    Yeah, you're as scrawny as I am. Eat a lot, drink a lot of milk, do low reps of high weight compound lifts. You'll do fine. I've already gone from 130lbs up to 143lbs and I'm a good deal stronger. But I'm too lazy to be consistent.

    Thread Hijack:

    If i'm going to do Stronglift 5x5s on the same day as technique/sparring/bag work is it better to do the weights first or second? Theres a definate correct answer to this but i can't for the life of me find it with the search function.

    If you want your weightlifting to get better and lift bigger weights, lifts first.

    Aye but won't that effect the technique training afterwards and increase injury risk? Hopefully one of the gurus will duck in and clear this up.

    It is far better to do BJJ with exhausted muscles, and focus on proper technique, than it is to weight lift with little ATP left in your muscles and deal with a greatly reduced max.

    Also, weighlifting once a week is of minimal benefit. Twice a week minimum.
