Use your legs. Tight guard, pull forward with your knees.
I'm a scrawny little guy so I find that I have to use my entire body to get people's posture broken down. Your legs are just as useful as your arms when breaking people down. Once you get them down get your guard up as high as possible and keep it tight. -

If you can't get them down to you, go up to them.
Make sure you keep your ass on the ground. Don't be afraid to open up your legs. There will be a guillotine, and two different sweeps available if you keep your eyes open :p.

Are you going to be there Friday at judo? I can always answer basic bjj questions dude.
The two above have the two big points covered though.
Bridge up and then crunch back using your core and legs to break posture. If you can't, play sit up guard with its corresponding bump sweep, kimura, guillotine, omoplata, etc. -

Try holding them down with the arms or the gi (assuming its gi), if you can't bring them down with underhooks or head control there is always the arms and the lapel. The most common way people posture up in guard (in my experince) is by putting their arms on you and pushing up so try learning some techniques to stop that or how ever else they are maintaing their posture.

I prefer overhook/ head control. Shift the hips slightly to the overhook side.
I'd look up Eddie Bravo's Pyramid. Just for the basic Idea. I have alot of trouble with stronger/faster guys and this control helps alot.
Sit up, wrap the arm, thai clinch the back of the head and fall back. Move hips just a bit to the side for an ever so slight whizzer type control. The Pyramid has you going way out to the side, but I find hen teaching beginners, it is very risky to put your hips way out.
And as others have said...squeeze the knees. There is no cheating, there is only jiu-jitsu. -

I use overhooks/underhooks in gi as well. Usually i overhook an arm and grab the opposite side lapel and work for the lapel choke, if its gi.

except for rubber guard, but hey man, i did rubber guard for a while and tore the **** out of my knee. Yes, i know i was doing something wrong. I think most people do who learn from a book.
