    Changing my major

    Hey all,

    Just a question....

Up until now, I've been going for my BA degree in Criminal Justice, but I'm finding it kinda dry and boring.

I was thinking of changing my major to either:

    - Philosophy

    - English, or

    - Linguistics

No matter what I do, I'm gonna minor in Japanese anyway.

    Any thoughts?

Yes. Philosophy. But don't waste your time with any Derrida or Lacan or any of that pomo garbage. David Hume ALL THE WAY!!!
Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

Well, Deus, I already make a good living as a police officer.

I just do the degree in my spare time. But I don't want to study something that bores the hell outta me. I'd rather study something interesting.

The stuff I was learning in the Criminal Justice field was mostly administration and management....the kinda stuff you'd wanna know if you were interested in making lieutenant or any other pencil pushing rank.

    Good on ya, dude.

What are your long term goals? Do you plan to stick with law enforcement or move into other careers?

I just completed a degree in forensic science/advanced investigation but it had a lot of CJ elements to it. None of the majors you suggest will do anything for your career as a police officer but I suspect you already knew this. Here for what it is worth are some majors that are not CJ that would help.

Chemistry or biology - Good for going into forensic science later in your career when you don't want to do traffic stops in favor of processing crime scenes. Chemistry is especially regarded as the keys to the forensic science kingdom.

Accounting, finance. The former is especially good for handling white collar crime and impressing your bosses by tracing paper trails.

Spanish. Useful in the US for interacting with many of your non-english speaking clients, I suspect that French would take its place in Canada.

Psychology/addiction counseling -Not for behavioral profiling but good for assessing people who the court sends to various diversionary programs.

computer science, good for forensic activities like chasing cyber stalkers or going on-line and pretending you are a 13 year old girl so you can bust the perves in your neighborhood or halfway across North America.

Since you have the time and money to spare, its time you developed your ground game! Judo, BJJ, Sambo, Catch Wrestling, go for it...read books in those subjects above in your spare time.

Good advice to learn Spanish as well.
