... to which list of fictions I would add the Felicitate Brotherhood in Tom Robbins' classic "Another Roadside Attraction".

In the really real world ... well, the Vatican's Swiss Guard aren't monks per se, but they are all kinds of martial. Also, if it counts, one of the earliest surviving European personal combat treatises (known by its catalog number, I:33) portrays a monk as a sword and buckler instructor. That system of fencing is being revived (see between 0.25 and 0.59 of this Swedish TV report on a recent historical martial arts conference):

about monks with swords and all.

you have to realise that in medieval Europe loads of knights nobles and sometimes even kings who had done naughty things would join a monastary when they became older.
This way they tried to secure a place up in heaven, to make ammends.

Yep. IIRC there were various laws passed in England to try to stop sword-and-buckler wielding monks from brawling in the streets.

There's also the Maltezers who have one of the tiniest countries on earth, its a building inside vatican city.

officially they have armed forces adn even currency, but i think they're just a bunch of fagg0ts who play knights templar.
