I went from my eternal resting state of 170 to over 200 on a veggie diet - but I doubt there was any muscle in that, I just started living at an all-you-can-eat veg buffet (literally).
Anyway, great job on the lifting progress, keep up your whey shakes and nuts intake, and for Krishna's sake get some leafiness and color in your diet.
As for the ammonia thing, I'll repeat urea FTW.

The reason I gained weight when a vegetarian was simple:
it became too easy to substitue rice, soy, pasta or potato for a main course.
Starch and carb replace protein.

And it's easy to gain weight on a vegan or veggy diet. Many years ago my brother and roomy decided to be spiritually advanced or something (eating too much acid in the late 60s had something to do with this) and be vegetarian. Problem was they lived by a cheap Honolulu bakery and filled up on garbage* and both quickly got fatter (something to do with the late 60s culture of smoking lots of pot with the resulting 'munchies' - and in their case, only exercising when the surf was good).

If you're poor and starving, do yourself a favor and drop the veg thing until you can afford proper food. You need all the high quality protein you can get when your not getting enough to eat.
