I never noticed that before. That gym is retarded. I pray there aren't many gyms like this.

this happened to me last week

i was in the gym doing 165lbs deadlifts for ten reps, and this skinny as kid is standing next to me doing bicep curls with 10lbs weights, and really grunting and looking like hes curling a sofa, then sits there in between sets and openly luagh at me for doing deadlifts

The thing is, hypertrophy isn't strength, so I don't quite see how one can train for "functional strength" instead of hypertrophy. Wouldn't it just be "strength" rather than "functional strength"?

What about the guys that can bench like 400 lbs, and then once they're done, they sit there and camp out. One time this guy (clad in white underarmour) was done doing his LAST SET. I know this because his spotter had unloaded the bar and wiped it off and left. The guy proceeded to take his cell phone out of his baggy shorts and call his girlfriend. My training partner and I took the next available bench, and each of us did 4 sets 12 reps, wiped off the bar, picked up the curl bar, did 4 sets of curls AND 4 sets of tricep extensions, each set consisting of 8-12 reps. AND GUESS WHAT: Captain America was STILL on the phone with Liberty Girl. That's a prime example of "gym people suck".:mumum:

Sometimes I end up having to bail these guys out.
As a semi-portly, middle-aged guy myself, I have to agree: we're all twats. However, at my gym we tend to be out-twatted by guys in their 20s who walk around with an invisible roll of carpet under each arm, only ever bench (with an arch you could walk under) and curl, and drop dumbells from shoulder height at the end of each set. By contrast, Sam is about 75, weighs about 140 pounds, is unfailingly polite (but doesn't do small talk), and still squats over 250 pounds in good style in the power rack. He's a good 'un.

You're supposed to bench with an arch.

Doesn't that depend on why you're benching? Big arch to minimise the range of movement if you're a powerlifter, considerably less so if you want to work the pecs and anterior delts through a more complete range of motion. I'm no powerlifter and you're probably an experienced trainer so I'm prepared to be corrected but it's what I've been told and it makes sense to me.
