    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    First sanctioned "gloved" boxing match?

OK, (still) working on Owen Swift, I came across this fight:

1820 Feb. 29. [Belasco and Sampson], with gloves, 9 rounds. Martin's-street.

MoQ was, what?, 1860 or so? This is the first fight Swift records that he notes "with gloves" and the fights, he implies at least, are all sanctioned. So, is this the first Sanctioned gloved match?

    Peace favor your sword,
    Kirk

I think that was when they had revised the London Prize Ring rules, but before Queensbury rules. Not sure. But I do know that LPR rules were originally bare-knuckle.

I'd like to see it like in that movie Undisputed, where it was LPR rules with 6 ounce gloves.

Before MoQ, gloves ("mufflers"/"mittens") were used for amateur and practice sparring whereas the Prize Ring proper was generally considered bare knuckle.

The latest dated manual I have which records the London Prize-ring Rules is dated 1913 and it, like all the earlier renditions of the LPR rules, makes no mention of gloves (though there are specific rules prohibiting spikes on your shoes and giving Seconds the right to inspect your shorts to ensure that nothing is in them that shouldn't be).

    Peace favor your sword,
    Kirk

I'm going to go ahead and ask for some specifics. What would be in their shorts that shouldn't be there? Marmalade? A bear? Spikes? A Def Leopard album?

well, if you had a ninja or two in your shorts, it could seriously affect the outcome of the fight...

That's when it became what might more accurately be called pillowfighting.

    From the standard LPR:
