Actually, regarding punching to break (not shatter) someone's ribs, in medical school the anatomy professors went over the various ways ribs break, and their weakest point against impact. Specifically, they mentioned a "boxer's angle" which is the dorsal curvature of the rib, being particularly weak, and susceptible to breaking upon quality (ie a good martial arts strike is enough) impact. Furthermore, that can cause your internal organs under those ribs (liver or spleen) to sustain trauma. Since those are highly vascularized tissues (ie lots of blood flow) the right amount of trauma and/or luck can cause you to bleed to death internally if you don't go get medical care after being injured.
