    DrunkenJ: Kano actually was trying to reincorporate striking back into randori when he died. Also, I believe him trying to limit groundwork was when people started doing almost purely groundwork and neglected standup. He wanted about 50% groundwork 50% standup, which sounds about right to me. Also, it wasn't because of judoka who went to southamerica, it was because of the judoka involved in the kosen movement. He never wanted to get rid of kosen judo, though. He wanted there to remain groundwork specialists. He just wanted for the main judo syllabus to involve 50/50 standup/groundwork.

    Oh, Ronin: Are you saying top RANKED judoka (ie those with 7th or 8th dans) or top COMPETITORS. I'd imagine you are correct about top ranked judoka, but top competitors is another story.

    I meant the judoka, I don't know about competitors, maybe some do and some don't.
    Many of the ones in Japan, Europe and even N.America have dan rankings in Karate too.
    They complement each other nicely.
