    I got rid of the vid after realizing that it had very little actual heavy bag work in it, though Tyson does throw one really nice uppercut at the beginning :)

    Yeah, its mostly him moving, but its impressive to see it in a master shot like that, and not in a highlight reel.

    I do this drill sometimes. He's not actually hitting the bag, but using it to gauge distance.

    I've never found a satisfactory way to throw an uppercut on the heavy bag, so I compromise and use it to stop the bag with my forearm as the bag is on the returning swing after a jab or a combo.
    You still get the mechanics of the uppercut, the targeting (up through your opponent's guard from close in*), and I found it helps with timing, too.

    I don't think you get the benefit of the heavy bag (building power), though, so It's maybe better to drill the uppercut on pads, where possible.

    bags like this are pretty decent for uppercuts to the body



    never used one of those blocky things. The only thing I can see not liking about that is the fact that it's affixed to a wall or something so you don't really have a mobile target, plus you don't have the freedom to work combinations like you do with a bag.

    Personally I think working uppercuts into your combinations is much more important than having something you can practice uppercutting hard.

    Roach was arguably a bad-ass during his own boxing days and is one helluva trainer now.

    I would say a good portion of Pacquiao's uppercut success is based on Roach's use of that punch during his fighting days.

    Although I don't recall Roach using the lead hand uppercut as much as the right uppercut I am amazed at Pacquiao's handspeed with that left uppercut.

    We have one at my gym, but the round bag was best, in that you could practice your footwork and do other things, such as kicks, etc, on it. the round bag is nice if you're getting back in shape, as it is softer and easier on the joints then most heavy bags. Still, if you have the L shaped wall bag, it doesn't to give it a shoot. The other thing you can do is hang a bag horizontally and practice like that.
