Bushido Kai Judo Club - Penfield NY

Bushido Kai Judo Club is a not-for-profit Judo club run out of the Penfield Recreation Department.

Ratings:
Aliveness - 8: Randori is an almost every class occurrence. Only when there is a promotional, or testing will there not be randori. Sparing alternates between rounds of standing randori, trading throws back and forth, and grappling. Grappling starts either back to back, from the knees or in a pre-arranged position i.e. one partner in a pin, in turtle, on their back, etc.

Equipment - 6: We have a good size mat area, the mats are worn but they work.

Gym Size - 7: We train in a good size gymnasium, bathrooms, showers, and changing facilities are available.

Instructor Student Ratio - 8: There are easily eight to twelve black belts that train regularly at the club. Heiko Rommelman the head instructor is approachable, available and often teaches the white and yellow belts. There are also several very capable brown belts that help run small groups.

Atmosphere - 8: The club is open, friendly, and supportive. However, the high turn over rate in the lower ranks means it's hard to keep track of people coming and going.

Striking Instruction - N/A: We do Judo, what is this... striking thing?

Grappling Instruction - 7: We have a number of club members who frequently compete and place. Grappling is taught as an integral component of the class and transitions from throws to pins and submissions are taught frequently.

Weapons Instruction - N/A: We don't need no stinking weapons!

Full Contact Fight Team: All club members are encouraged to compete.

Also, the club has several high ranking Kata practitioners who frequently compete and place, and win in Kata competitions.

There are several women in the club, two at brown belt level.

Kids classes are taught separately and cost $36-$44 per ten week session.

Sensei Heiko also teaches a traditional Japanese Jujitsu class.

I fully approve this review. If I was going to be anal, I'd say the club does teach katas, which include some striking and weapons instruction, but its not often and its kata.

On the kata front, and as a feather in the schools cap, the IJF is hosting an international level kata competition as one of the pre-requisite for getting Judo kata into the Olympics. Of the FOUR teams from the United States, TWO come from Bushido Kai Judo Club.
