    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    knee replacement and bjj

    hey
i had total knee replacement about a year and a half ago
i am a okinawan karate guy, and would like to learn some basic bjj to round out my game...my ortho is kinda vague on limitations
i've got access to a reputable school, and they say they can train around my situation, but still i worry about an accidental twist
any input from bjj practioners would be appreciated

I'm no doctor, but if your knee's holding up well in general, I think that if you stay sharp and think ahead, you should be able to participate in BJJ training.

    Specifically, things like this:
-Inform your teacher and training partners of your injury and concerns
-Make note of the styles of your fellow students and refuse to roll with anyone who you don't trust
-Tap early, tap often, and tap forcefully - it's not a tournament

You won't be doing any knee attacks for a while (at least blue), so don't worry about people wrenching on it.

I'd think if you can do karate, you should be able to roll. Can the knee bear your weight or the weight of someone on top of you? I have an injured knee right now and I rolled (albeight lightly) this morning.
