Sounds like it could be a fractured rib. They dont always show up on the xray so the GP may call it a fracture if it doesnt show up on the xray (no Im not a Doctor). With those symptoms I would probably go to the emergency room if it were me (and Im not a panicky person at all) ... if I understood your description anyway.

It definitely got worse before it got better for me:
In 2006 one of my false ribs (I think it was 8) on my right side was torn from the costal cartilage of the ribs directly above and below it (7 and 9) in a BJJ tourney. That sucked a lot. The ER was not helpful. They misdiagnosed it as a hairline fracture or "muscle strain" when the x-rays came up negative. I ended up seeing a sports medicine doctor for a second opinion, who took about 2 seconds to correctly diagnose the issue.
He couldn't do much, other than prescribe a lot of pain medication. I was in a lot of pain for about a month, and the lortab 7.5s didn't do much other than take the edge off. Fucking ribs still aren't lined up right."No. Listen to me because I know what I'm talking about here." -- Hannibal -

Tough it out, big guy. Hang in there till the doctor's appt or make one sooner if it gets worse.

Yeah, I wasn't in a big hurry to drop into the ER... Already had a GP appointment, am not a huge fan of ER medicine for non-emergent issues (It's great if you're having a stroke, or have some hideous trauma, but for anything else they tend to give a quick 'n dirty diagnosis, throw some pain meds at you, and tell you to follow up with a GP appointment anyway.) Also, as people have pointed out, a rib fx isn't going to show on a chest film unless it's almost large enough to feel on the chest wall, anyway.
I often -work- in the ER, the aim is get 'em admitted or get 'em gone. They're usually not bad off enough to admit at the moment.
Anyway, after about hour eleven of work I was gimping and wincing enough to say 'Okay, **** this' and went down to our fast-track urgent care. X-ray showed jack, and the PA seemed to think I separated a couple of 'em. 'Here, take an assload of vicodin and plant your butt on the couch for a few days with ice packs'.
So, guess I tore the cartilage in the exact same spot I did a decade or so earlier. Damn things never do heal quite right. -

Yea, only what she really meant was; "Here, take an assload of vicodin, our $1000 bill, and plant your butt on the couch for a few days with ice packs."

Makes my chest hurt to read this.
After a cracked rib in HI I was back in Utah karate and told the brown we could spar but he HAD to avoid hitting THIS spot, about 1 inch below left tit. Of course first punch, bare knuckle, right to the spot. "You are turning white!" Hmmmm, I bet.
Sorry you hurt, and let us know if it gets better (or worse)."Preparing mentally, the most important thing is, if you aren't doing it for the love of it, then don't do it." - Benny Urquidez -

Generally, yeah. Though it falls under 'Yet another injury training with a new person'. More an instance of being off-balanced and spastic than malicious.

The only error of the day that DIDN'T hurt was when he elbowed me in the face. I think that's going to be my training preference for a couple months whenever I get back: "Dude, if you have to hit something, punch me in the face. Touch the ribs and I'll stab you in the neck."
