    Hell yeah! Hell no!

A quick hello and a question...

    Hey

Just signed onto the forum from Edmonton, Alberta in my search for good schools in the area. My main interest is in self defense and learning something new and exciting.

If anyone knows of any good schools in or around Edmonton that teach arts that focus on SD, please let me know.

Also, why can't I PM anyone? One of the reasons I joined was to reach AAAhmed46 about silat and krav maga in Edmonton.

    Thanks!

Welcome to Bullshido, the best Martial Arts forum on the entire Internet, mslbebiz. Seriously, you won't regret your choice to join us. We're a great bunch of folks, except for Hannibal. And Sirc. And TaiGip. And MMA Kid. And... well, you get the point.

You wont be able to PM until you have 50 posts (?i think). Or become a supporting member.

Welcome to Bullshido, what sort of MA are you thinking of taking? Any goals that you have in mind? Knowing this others may be able to give you better suggestions to suit your needs.

You're going to have to be way more specific. If you ask them, every MA school going to say they do self-defense. That's one of the purposes of MA.

Edit: Goddamn Syberia beat me to it.

^ I was referring to reality-based self defense. Something like FMA, Silat or Krav Maga/Kapap would be of most interest to me. Kenpo has always looked pretty good in this aspect, too. But it all really boils down to how they're taught and trained.

I know there's a couple bujinkan schools in the area, but honestly haven't heard or seen good things from this in a self defense aspect.

Not interested in karate, TKD, judo, aikido, tai chi or anything MMA related.

    Thanks guys.

In my opinion MMA and Judo are going to be better for self-defense than Krav Maga. I suggest you just google martial arts schools in your area. Visit all the ones that are of interest to you, and go with the one you like most.

Is there a particular reason you've chosen not to pursue karate, judo, or "anything MMA related"? Limiting your options that way may cost you some good opportunities.

I don't want to offend anyone with my answers, but I'll just say I'm not interested in many arts from a self defense standpoint. That includes the ones I listed, including MMA. I'm actually a big fan of Judo, but the other arts I've listed are much more interesting to me and applicable to the real world than everything else I've looked at.

    No Judo eh....

Try Sambo. It's like the Krav Maga of Russia.

Seems a lot of people are very fond of judo for self defense. Maybe I'll look into this further.

Then only problem I see though is striking, and I don't want to take two different classes simultaneously. Perhaps train some WWII striking ala Carl Cestari and Jim Grover at home.
