I mentioned diet in my first post. I'm still not seeing why Russ is worried he'll gain weight doing pistols and one-handed pushups and just working on getting more reps out.

The question, in one sentence, is this:

Will the exercises you've selected put Q in the sarcoplasmic hypertrophy range for an extended period of time?

If the answer to that question is no, then your plan is probably okay.
If the answer to that question is yes, then he should choose different exercises.

Being in the range for sarcoplasmic hypertrophy when you don't want sarcoplasmic hypertrophy to occur is a waste of time.

Depends what he eats and how many calories he burns with other training. If he runs a calorie surplus, he gains weight no matter what you have him do. Without a calorie surplus, he can't gain weight, no matter what routine he follows. Being in the range for sarcoplasmic hypertrophy when you aren't eating a bulking diet doesn't make you gain weight.

You've said what won't happen if he's in the sarcoplasmic hypertrophy range but doesn't run a calorie surplus. That's never been a point of contention.

I'm asking about what exactly you think will happen.

He'll get a challenge, he'll probably see increased vascularity in the major muscles involved in those exercises as he becomes able to do reps in the 'endurance' range (if he can't do that already). He'll also strengthen up various stabilisers as both movements can be tricky to keep balance.

He'll be able to see progress even if he decides to shed a substantial amount of weight because it's strength-to-bodyweight ratio that matters here rather than his absolute strength level.

If it's a strength to bodyweight ratio he's after, wouldn't it benefit him much more to work a significantly lower rep range than the 100s while maintaining a caloric deficit? Something in the 1-5 range for both strength and power?

He never asked for that. He just asked for a challenge. Why does everything have to be about maximal strength? He's not going to be doing hundreds of pistols anyway. He might not even be able to do 5 yet.
