    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    My first tournament

Had my first BJJ tournament today. Competed at 205

Got tapped out in my first match.

Guy bull rushed me, and being clever I thought as I was going backwards that I could get my foot in his hip and do some sort of tomoe nage throw

He just grabbed my foot and passed it through his legs into full mount. Next time I get bull rushed i am just going to pull guard and go from there.

I then spent the next 2:30 minutes fending off armbar attempts until he went to side and did some sort of reverse guillotine and I tapped

live an learn ,great experience regardless now I know what to expect and what to work on.
The dude was a few inches shorter than me but built like a football player which I later found out he was.

I think the title of the thread says "first tournament"... in all honesty I don't think anything else is really all that relevent.

first tournament is always the hardest. learn the monson choke, and defenses, and also work your conditioning, as I'm sure you realized how important that is today. aside from that congrats on getting through your first one.
FACT- Eddie Bravo invented the triangle choke when he used it to tap out helio gracie at an ac/dc concert.

I am not sure if it was a monsoon choke, he just more over powered me than anything.

next time I have to be more aggressive right from the get go so I don't get put in a bad position.

that's what the Monson Choke usually feels like... I mean look at Jeff Monson:

Aggresive can be good, but spazzing out isn't... which is what it sounds like your opponent was borderlining on you. as long as you stay calculated it's all good, and as long as you learn from your losses they aren;t really losses.

Sounds like we fought the same guy, lol. If I'd seen him coming I might have tried to armdrag or matador off to the side and take his back. Wonder if that would have worked for you..

Yeah in class when people spaz put I usually try and get to guard grab pistol grip on the sleaves and try to be patient while going to spider guard. This time I tried to be cute and clever and f*d up, not saying I could have beaten anyways but still.....

And to Hedge I have been doing MA on again and off again for 17 years (aikido, trad JJ, Gojujitsu and so on and so forth)

I started messing with BJJ doing occasional classes about 2 years ago, but as far as serious training regularly with a legit BB, keeping a journal. working my basics increasing my cardio, getting some stripes and dropping 15 pounds that started this June. Going into this tournament was an extension of that training

Now I need to know what to work on for the next tournament in 2 months.

    so bring on the lolz

Good on you for competing, Joe! You'll be more yourself at the next one.
