Having said that, I would keep in mind that in Japan, there is much more cross training than here in the US. It is hard to find "pure" fighters. For example, Gomi's gym (kiguchi dojo) also trains sambo along with everything else they do. Same with SK Absolute, which has many MMA fighters in Japan who use leg locks. The culture of fighting over there is very different. I think one of the reasons we see more crazy leg attacks is because risk attacks are much more accepted and anticipated...unlike here where mma has a much safer and conventional type of feel.
Megumi Fuji and Satoko Shinashi are both sambo practitioners and do lots of leg locks. They are top level women's MMA fighters.
