    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Is this considered good aikido?

One of my favorite films is a documentary from the late 70's called "Budo: the art of killing" most of the featured martial arts are quite impressive however the portion dedicated to aikido seems somewhat ridiculous. I mean no offense to those who practice aikido as I am sure there is plenty of good aikido training, I just wonder if what is featured is considered good aikido.

I especially question 2:59 into the clip when the aikido master throws three people at the same time and the guy on the right appears to throw himself if one watches carefully.

That aikido is standard "run at sensei and fall over" stuff.

So what is the objective or purpose to this training. If you fake the effectiveness of the techniques it seems like a large waste of time.

There is no objective or purpose to it, except maybe to fill the wallet of the sensei. People can be mindless retards who will believe anything.

I'm sure we will all eat out words when the zombies attack, and the aikidokas are the only survivors.

The aikido you see in the clip is Yoshinkan style. It's considered one of the hardest and most efective styles available and is one of the styles practised by Tokyo Riot Police.

What is shown at 2:59 into the clip is not three guys attacking the demonstrator and being thrown, it is a demo of what they call kokyu ryoku (roughly translated as breath power) aimed at developing short power, as in the Bruce Lee's 1 inch punch, but in opposite directions simultaneously. Add some theatrics (the "attackers" going airborne themselves as soon their balance is taken instead of trying to regain posture) for the masses and that's all.

It's not a fighting technique itself, it is a physical training exercise.

Wonder how the sensei would look if he was attacked (in the demo) by three untrained people instead of aikido black belts...

Interesting that this is considered the hard form of aikido. Viewing the video it almost seemed like the softest, many times the defender threw the opponent without even employing a lock. Are there harder techniques that are not shown here or is this a good example of this form of aikido? If this hard aikido what is soft aikido like?
