Thread: Dealing with Fatties

Somebody already mentioned them, but ankle picks are excellent takedowns against opponents far larger than you. Causing them fall to their back is always a preferred option versus suffering under a 275 pound sprawl.
I'm not qualified to comment on striking, but as far as grappling is concerned, PSB had some good advice. Chokes are excellent subs to use against big guys. The other solution? Mat time, mat time, mat time.Shut the hell up and train.

The thing is you have to put them into a position where they use a lot of their energy without out YOU doing the same thing. Big guys naturally will have less gas and will try to compensate by laying on you instead of moving. Force them to work, and before you know it, you'll be sweeping them and working a submission from the top.
As for the half guard, it's my personal experience that it becomes a real fight not to get flattened out, so I'd avoid that, but that's just me.

I personally find when I am grappling that I tend to have an easier time submitting bigger guys. Typically since I am smaller than them I can maneuver my body with more agility than they can. Because of this, they don't react as quickly to my submission attempts as smaller guys do and this usually spells victory for me.
I don't if this translates over to MMA where the guy is trying to hit you.

If you can't damage them physically, try and hurt the, emotionally. Call them names like 'fatty', 'big stuff', and 'tons of fun'. Hopefully they'll run out of the ring in tears.

Distract us with cake. It's your only hope.Where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence.

I too have had the joy of being squashed like a bug by somebody 75lbs heavier than me. Just recently I had to tap out when one of the larger student in my school transitioned to North-South and his gut formed an air tight seal over my face. Winner via gut smother.
For a really good time go roll with the locals in Hawaii, some of those cats are 300+ with purple and brown belt to boot. :shudder:

I'm not good enough to get top very often, but I try to keep their weight off me and keep scrambling to make them wear themselves out.
Whatever you do don't let them get cross-body, ugh.:Determined:

Something you need to know about fat guys with pudgy guts is that their gut isn't in anyway conditioned. I've seen this time and time again in tournaments where fat people cop front kicks whilst walking into their opponents, and seeing their faces when their foot dissapears into their stomach.
You'll find it works on any area that is fat and no muscle, especially legs.
When I personally spar with people who weigh a lot I really use my foot work and range, I'm 5"11 and 150pounds (70kg) as well. Yes you're still going to get hit, but if you're landing 5 hits (good ones) to their 1, then you'll come off the victor.
