There isn't sambo for like 300 miles from Columbus. I looked already :( Both of the BJJ instructors at the MMA gym I train at are very competent with leglocks, and one of them did sambo for years a while back, but their overall grappling strategy is of course more BJJ than sambo. This doesn't mean I don't get into leglock wars with both of them. Which I lose. I was more interested in the throwing and ground control methods of sambo.

I can't speak for the other BJJ gyms in the area, but we have a significant number of competition wins by leglock. One of our blue belts is famous for rolling toe holding anyone that opens their guard, and another one kneebars his way out of everything.

Blue, why must you always ruin perfectly good beorn/moose trash talking with your logic and reason?

sorry, was more just pointing out that if you wanted to learn leglocks there *is* an option in town after I saw you mention you thought most BJJ places don't teach them.

that said, I do expect a kneebar on the moose at this seminar coming up.

I find the leglock comments interesting due to the fact that in the higher level of sambo training the research is into new ways to get the armlocks.

We are finding that you can not get the leg of an experienced player.

I recommend looking for articles about the history of SAMBO. It's interesting how Olympic, Japanese-dominated judo was influenced by the influx of "Russian judo." Neil Adams talks about it in a few of his Masterclass books.

Also, SAMBOists often train and compete with strikes (not to the head when on the ground, I believe), in addition to funny shorts.

There actually is a masterclass judo book titled "russian judo" that makes it all clear.

fair enough, but I get him first, I don't want any excuses from him as to why I kicked his ass.

I probably will start training BJJ too, but only come summer time when I have the money/time for it
