They're closer to the shuaijiao jackets than a gi, right?

    Shuai jiao jackets: http://www.lianwutang.com/pictures/shuai_jiao_cloth.jpg
Short sleeves, mostly open in front, no skirt to speak of.

    SAMBO Kurtka: http://www.kagisports.com/kurtkabutton.jpg
Seems to have long sleeves, and has a skirt. The pic looks like it's more closed in front like a judogi, but the NYT video looks more open like you said.

    Please correct my foolish research.

if you had a Shuai Jao jacket where you could unzip the sleeves and stuff them in a pouch in your back. Then you could fold the jacket into a sort-of bag to hold some Pat Benetar tapes...Well, not that but yes, Shuai Jao+sleeves.

You can do that classy 2on1 shoulder grip with the epaulette&lapel that you'd do with the short-sleeve&lapel of a Shua Jao jacket. Fun stuff.

oh yeah, even despite the skirting below the belt, you cannot grip the cloth below the belt (unless you're incidentally holding it with a belt grip). So some kurtkas have less skirting, some a little more.

So tell them it is a variant of Judo with a much greater emphasis on ground fighting.

If they don't know what Judo is, give up.

If you don't know what Judo is, we may have reached the root of the problem.

It sounds like the people he talks would think that Judo is some form of karate.

A lot of people think Judo is karate. I can't count the number of times I've heard someone say "Hai-ya" and make some retarded knife hand strike when they hear I practice judo.
