Assistant Olympic coaches help teach the UT Judo team. If you don't have access to that facility, most of the actual judo players in austin teach as added curriculum either at BJJ or TKD schools, to my understanding.

If you find it, let me know. I'm pissed because now I'm all graduated and can't join the UT judo club.

There is a Dojo in Round Rock that is supposed to be outstanding. Would that be too much of a commute? It looks like its pretty close to the North side of Austin. Look for Zelnic Matl's club. The guy is worth a look. I'm not sure of the location but it comes up with google fu.

Several things make me leery. Maybe you can help.

    (1) It says it's not a competition school. As I understand it, if you're to be given rank by the Kodokan, you've got to compete.

    (2) Proximity to ninjas and taekwondo. I understand needing to share space to keep rental fees down, but am I going to be taken out of judo class by a bunch of tabi-wearing LARPers?

On the other hand, the instructors qualifications look pretty good.

There are some dojos that don't require that you compete. They don't prevent it but don't require it. If you want to study Judo and don't have the time to compete, Matl's dojo would be the place to go. I heard of him from some people who have a DVD of his. I was able to view it and was impressed with his ideas of kuzushi and opening the opponents defenses. When I get a chance to get to Round Rock, I'm looking this guy up.

Well, I might have time to compete, and I could compete in judo because it won't leave my face all bruised, so I might look that up, even if it is a bit of a jaunt to Round Rock.
