I just think Northern is too fixated on "looking like a preying mantis". Southern is nice and aggressive, forward-explosive...
Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

I have an acquaintance who does chang quan tang lang (there are several subspecies of northern mantis). It seems to be an athletic system with a ton of legwork.

Effective? I'm not sure 'cause I've seen them mainly work on forms. Overall, they appear to have a decent root and generate adequate power. I know the main guy supplements his training with groundwork, but I suspect he's a tad unusual.

    An hour/week

Yeah, I'll definately check the guy out. Problem is, I'd only be able to get an hour of instruction a week from the guy, 'cause of my schedule.

I've heard this teacher is really great, but I'm wondering if an hour of instruction per week in the art would really help me, if or maybe I should seek something I can attend more regularly from someone who wouldn't be so great...
Unlike the rest of our compadres, I'd say an hour a week ain't so bad for *instruction*. However, you should be prepared for tons of additional training outside of class.

If you're disciplined enough to put in alot of solo time *and* can find time for partner work outside of class, it's not a bad way to start.

Finally, after training for awhile, your schedule or the school's may change.

FWIW, if you're looking for instruction in Portland, I know of at least 3 reasonable options (one of whom I know personally). PM me for details.

A two hour minimum workout everyday should help.

I do about that much conditioning/weight training everyday...or did you mean 2 hours of independent martial arts practice?

And the school schedule problem is really a combination of my ROTC lead lab...it pretty much takes up all of Tuesday, which is when said teacher holds 1 one his classes (the other day is Thurs). I intend to be in that program for all 4 years that I'm up here, so I don't think that'll change much.

I mean 2 hours minimum of MA practice. Depending on time, prioritize your strength stuff. That is all.
