James Irvin tests positive for Methadone & Oxymorphone

    Source: http://mmamania.com/2008/07/29/james...d-oxymorphone/

Light heavyweight James Irvin has tested positive for Methadone and Oxymorphone, following his first round technical knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Methadone and Oxymorphone are often used to treat chronic pain.

The “Sandman” has 20 days to respond and request a formal hearing to dispute the finding. If the ruling is upheld after the hearing he faces a possible fine and suspension.
All of the other fighters tested on the card came back clean.
Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

Methadone is indeed used to ween opiate addicts. It's supposed to be dispensed at controlled locations in incrementally decreasing doses. I don't think it's usually used for recreational value because it lacks the euphoria that people associate with opiates.

At least that's what I gather from clicking through threads on drug forums.

I've done methadone recreationally before. It doesn't really give you the euphoria associated with heroin/morphine/etc, but that **** had me fucked up for 2 whole days.

I forget what mg it was, but I'm never doing that **** again. I stick to the occasional valium, but even then you have to be careful. I've read a lot of horror stories about valium addiction, so I only drop one like once every 2 weeks.

To his credit, he did not fight poorly.

Anderson Silva is just that fuckin' good.

Listening to a radio interview with Bill Douglas from the California SAC this morning he was commenting on this and Levens on the Affliction show, he indicated that in California alone (so between the Affliction and EliteXC shows) there are at least 5 fighters with pending re-tests for either steroids or drugs of abuse and he was of the opinion that most of those test failures would be confirmed on re-test in the next few weeks. So quite a few bans coming their way.

Extraordinary. I don't know much about drugs so I don't know how relevant taking some things would be in preparing for Silva. Does it help to explain the very quick KO or was that a mix of poor tactics by Irvin and exceptional alertness/responsiveness by Silva.

Having watched the build-up (I'm in London) I almost (almost) felt short-changed by the result but you couldn't argue with what happened.

Now, I'm puzzled. An explanation is needed of what he took; how much; why.

    I don't think he'll get a re-match though(!)
