[quote=AnnaTrocity]I think you'd be better served by working at controlling the range either by closing it completely so that punching is a non-issue or working on circling out and reestablishing the range you want./quote]
To the OP - You can't get better advice than this.
You either close and make punching a non-issue as Anna says, or move outside to establish the range you want.
Stay loose, move, keep your hands up and don't think - react. Mucho sparring is how you get to this point. -

Okay, thanks for the advice. Controlling the range I'm noticing is a huge part, I tend to have trouble with people that have longer reach than me.
Reacting is a good point too, I think too much when sparring sometimes.. trying to think of how the pick apart who I'm sparring against, rather than just going with the flow and doing what feels adequate at the moment. -

What about when backed against a cage (or on t3h str33t, a wall or...something)? I personally have no experience whatsoever fighting with any kind of obstruction (rope, corner, fence), but I'd imagine it's not as simple as slipping to the side, so you might have to cover up and try to pummel for control from there.

If you're real tight, shove them with your shoulder and circle or throw a punch,a hook if you don't shove them far, a straight if you got some decent space.
Then circle
Alternatively stick both hands out in front of you in like an x with your palms in their face, bring your shoulders up and your head down. This will back them off and make you hard to hit.
Then circle.
Shelling up is never a good idea. Never, ever, ever, ever under any circumstances.
If you aint movin, you wrong.Last edited by Anna Kovacs; 7/30/2008 8:55pm at .

Stay relaxed, you use up too much energy being tense. Also when you do throw your punches, you won't as much power behind them if your tense. Its difficult to do at times especially when you are going at a fast pace but you will tire a lot quicker if you don't learn to just relax....
