Silva got the shot instead, I think probably because at the time, there really weren't a lot of middle weights out there that were viable contenders. And he fucking destroyed the champion.

And then he did it again.

It wasn't just that he won. It's that he won easily, and made it look cool. He's ratings gold.
As I recall, Silva WAS pretty much fast tracked to the title, however to give the title shot some legitmacy (beyond 'We've got no middleweights that Franklin hasn't mauled with his big-middleweight-ness') immediately after the Leben bout a vote was offered on UFC.com as to who should be Silva's next fight. Like they say in the Usual Suspects a line-up is always a bunch nobodies and a crook so they suggested four tedious fighters no-one ever wanted to see or a title fight with one of the most popular fighters in the company at that stage. Curiously, no-one on this anonymous internet poll wanted to see Silva vs. Swick or whomever (although I reckon Silva vs. Louiseau would've been entertaining enough at that point).

I think the Octagon is still not right for MMA. The ring is worse. Just make it an actual circle like in EliteXC and be done with it.

Speaking of which, I'm actually looking forward to their card tonight.

Fedor Made 1.6 Million For Affliction: Banned

Yesterday, a very reliable source informed Fightline.com that Fedor Emelianenko received a "substantial" bonus before his fight with Tim Sylvia.
Today, Fightline.com has learned that the bonus was 1.3 million dollars, putting Emelianenko's final take at 1.6 million dollars. That's quite substantial.

Eyebrows were raised when the California State Athletic Commission released the promotions payouts and it was revealed that Emelianenko ($300,000) received less than half of what his opponent Tim Sylvia ($800,000) received; this after Fedor demolished Sylvia in under a minute.

Emelianenko's bonus plus his base salary coupled with securing advertising for M-1 Global and the rights to his fight footage in Europe possibly represents a very sweet deal for the popular Russian fighter and certainly one of the best deals for a single fight in MMA history.

I guess they paid him in Russia so he wouldn't have to pay tax in the states. I've also heard that he's got exclusive rights to use the fight footage to promote his M1 shows in Russia.
