At the gym...
10-15 Min. run as a warm-up before doing full stretching and then going on to lift weights. Then a 30-45 Min. run after the workout. I like to mix things up on the treadmill. Vary the speed etc. I especially like running hills. After that I do some swimming which is the relax/cool down period.

Not enough, these days, unfortunately.
Back in my wrestling days, I'd go for four miles at a time -- no problem. These days, I'm pretty winded after 1 mile. I'm slowly (with full-time job, part-time grad school and training in two arts) getting my conditioning back to where I can randori for a good stretch and not gas. Once I get back to the point where I can go a couple miles without feeling like I've been through the wringer, I'll be happy.

I find that time running can be spent doing better MA specific activities.

When preparing for a competition:
Minimum 6 weeks long, slow distance to build baic endurance
Minimum 6 weeks speed, strides, threshold runs.
All to supplement the MA training that gets paced about the same way over the 12 week period.
How often, how fast, how far and how much all depend on the shape trainee is beforehand and what his/her body can handle.
Seems to work OK.

I love when the runners at my gym solicit advice. "Ya need a good base of 7 hours of running per week, minimum...MINIMUM. That gets you in shape for anything else. On top of that you could throw in a little strength training too. I've been running since..."
"...I just wish I could do more; I just cant' seem to do as much as I used to. My knees, ankles, and lower back are starting to go. I really should work on my flexibility too. Other than that, it's a great exercise."
A great exercise which, admittedly, does nothing for strength, *or* flexibility (much less for the upper body) yet *does* result in cumulative injury?
With friends like these...
Running for the sake of anything but running itself is absurd.
