Shileileighs [sp???] are fucking awesome. If I ever visit Ireland I plan on getting one and carrying it around everywhere.

I visited an Irish heritage festival today and saw one old gent walking with a very fine shillelagh. Those sold in gift shops (including in Ireland) tend to be seriously crappy, though - it's hard to find anyone who makes them the old-school way.

BTW, Cold Steel offers a polypropylene shillelagh that's gotten decent reviews on some Irish stick fighting forums - http://www.coldsteel.com/91pbs.html

Polypropylene is all fine and good, but if I get a shillelagh [ah, so that's how it's spelt] then I'm going all out for the fine wood.

Personally, I think it rocks though I see plenty of humor value in it too (the penguin pic made me lol). It's never going to be better than something purely designed as a weapon from the ground-up, but it's a weapon that's (apparently) durable & solid with good reach (making it solid vs. knife attacks) that can be carried in plain view without causing a commotion.

Even a sword cane would likely not make it through airport security.

My dad made a beautifull walking stick/stiletto on the end. The thing is hand made and the middle of the stick is filled with a thick steel core. The top handle is a hand carved doves head. One swift knocking to the head=lights out. Still not as beautiful as a shillelagh in my opinion.
