Kickboxing crowd turns violent
An investigation has been launched into crowd violence at a kickboxing event which was eventually quelled by more than 90 police officers using CS spray.
Three people suffered minor injuries in the disturbance among the crowd of 1,000 people at the Magna Centre in Rotherham, which broke out at about 5.30pm on Sunday.
Police were forced to call for reinforcements after they were pelted with plastic seats.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "A large scale fight broke out between two groups of people in the auditorium and over 90 officers eventually had to be deployed to quell the violence.
"Three members of the public received minor injuries. They have sought medical attention. Minor damage was sustained to the premises and a window was broken on a police car outside.
"Temporary seating was thrown and officers forming a loose cordon to separate rival factions came under attack.
"Public order was restored as more officers arrived at the scene after a call or assistance but no arrests were made."
She confirmed CS spray carried for the personal protection of officers was used as part of the operation.
