    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Teh kinda like totally cool Crossfit 2 minute conditioning circuit video thingie

    Obligatory comments:

    1. Holy ****, I like this crossfit circuit thingie.
    2. I like how they use mats and tire rubbers for sledgehammer work.
    3. I like the idea of wearing a gas mask/snorkel. Kinda like the suggestion of using your mouth guard when doing road work.
    4. Holy ****, I like this (yea, I know, I said it).

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Thanks, cool video. I'll definetely try it.

What's the point of the gasmask?

I mean it looks cool, sure...but I've never worn one. Breathing is restricted obviously?

IIRC it imitates the advantage of training at altitude. It has to do with your cardio.

I haven't watched the video (blocked at work), but I'm not a fan of training with externally restricted breathing, and here's why...

High-altitude training has offsetting benefits and drawbacks - the high altitude itself leads to beneficial adaptations, but it reduces the intensity and volume at which one can train. Most of the research I've seen thus far says that "live high, train low" is the way to go, and restricted breathing during exercises would be exactly the opposite.

Probably more seriously, though, exercising while inhaling against resistance runs the risk of negative pressure pulmonary edema. I don't know what the incidence rate is (although the related swimming-induced pulmonary edema is documented), but if it did happen, it'd ruin your whole day.

Edit: Got home, watched the video - aside from the gas mask thing, it looks good for anyone whose shoulders are in good shape.

a couple swastikas wouldn't strike me as out of place...

    other than that, good stuff.
In summation your argument denotes a lack of intellectual honesty on your part. It is my contention that this matter would best be solved with fisticuffs. I believe I will be victorious in this regard.

I would love to try the gas mask regardless. I can image the old folks' faces at the dog park where I usually take my tire and sledgehammer. They look at me weird as it is.

With that, I'd be like the CrossFit version of freaking Darth Vader. :new_alien

Any type of strenuous physical activity done while wearing a gas mask is a bitch. You can screw off the filter if you don't want to go all out right away. But it just sucks way too much for my taste.

Well, I've done sprints on wet, tall grass with water shoes while biting a mouth piece as hard as possible. It sucks balls to no end. Doing that with a mask would be even worse.

It should be interesting, and certainly I'd love to try. But Russ has a good point about it. Plus I'm asthmatic (even though I haven't had an episode in almost 24 years), so I gotta be careful with this ****.

I'm always impressed with Crossfit's training methods. We've got a local Crossfit/BJJ/MMA center. Anytime there are MMA matches locally, they always take a bunch of fighters, and almost all of them win, time and time again. The win/loss percentage is really ridiculous. They're well trained, but I think their physical conditioning is their biggest advantage. They're animals.

Speaking of Crossfit, I love this video:

I know what the mask is for (although I'm pretty sure that was a paintball mask), but is the point of hitting things with a sledgehammer? Is there really any movement in MA that it mimics?
