If the word "chiropractor" sets off alarm bells, find a good physiotherapist. Heat/cold therapy, ultrasound, electrotherapy, etc... without the "spinal adjustment" stuff.
Quick lesson on how to tell a good physiotherapist from a bad physiotherapist (true story!):
Russ: "I'm not getting full strength out of my shoulder."
Good physio: *has me do a bunch of exercises* "Okay, see this? The strong position for your shoulder is supposed to be when the shoulder blade's retracted. *does a little demo with my good arm* But with your shoulder, it's reversed *does demo with bad arm*. Your rotator cuff isn't strong enough, probably from being strained, and your lower lat isn't being recruited. Here's some tubing and a list of exercises to strengthen both."
Russ: "Hey, all right!"
Russ: "I think I hyperextended my left knee. The high-calf to low-hamstring region is sore." (give me some hot/cold, some electrodes and some ultrasound)
Bad physio: "*has me do 45 minutes of unrelated tests, culminating in a wobble board test* Uh... *rolls dice* your gluteus medialis is too weak, and you have balance problems."
Russ: "Uh huh. See you later. " (I can squat [large number] pounds with good form, I quit on your gluteus medialis test because it was crushing my balls, and I'm having trouble with your stupid wobble board because my knee is hyperextended.)

These techniques are (can be) also helpful:
The first one has worked very well for me with the same symptoms you are describing.

Even before BJJ, I've always had what you're calling 'muscle guarding'. Since that's usually a soft tissue issue, a massage from a good sports RMT has always done more for me than anything else.

I have decided to hold off on the chiro visits and see a acupuncture guy, as well as get a second opinion from a chiropractor who is a friend of the family.
How is your shoulder, Snakie?

I went to the accupuncturist, which was relaxing, but didn't really help for long. So I went to a second chiropractor, he took x-rays and found a misalignment in the vertabrae in my neck. This probably happened in class getting choked out, I don't know how you BJJ guys deal with that.
After deep tissue massage and an adjustment, I feel better today, finally.
